Below the dam the fishing has been very good on thewarmer days. If you can hit the river when the temperatures are in the mid –forties and higher the fishing should be good. With that said, currently it isin the 30’s and snowing in Pagosa, I should be fishing instead of writing thisreport. I think it would be a good BWO afternoon!

Speaking of BWO’s, we were still catching fish on topbetween 1 and 3 pm. The day I took Bill William’s he threw a tandem streamerrig all day with the exception, of casting to rising fish by Duranglers corner.Other than that it has been nymphing. The day I fished with Steve P, I had hisfishing buddy Jim rigged with an orange / yellow egg with 1 piece of krystalflash at the eye of the hook, and a red larva all day, I never changed his rig,and he was in fish all day! I kept changing Steve's rig up, looking for a new patternwith the fish. I would get into more fish with otherpatterns, but had to keep changing when the set up would go cold. Later in theday Steve ended up with a red larva back on, below a HCPT, and landed one last fish atthe Last Chance Hole.

95 days till we chase Tarpon in the Everglades!!

Scott Taylor
http://highcountrycharters.com
970-946-5229

While you are in town make sure that you visit thefollowing businesses!

Need Fly Fishing gear? There were spots that I have only caught afew fish in the last 5 years, that were now loaded with fish. There were alsospots that I have caught fish, and now they are dry. The spots that were driedup were generally unproductive, except for the occasional very selective midgeslurpler! With the sections that were dried up by dams or diversions, it hascreated increased flows, which should decrease sedimentation in the river.Overall I am very impressed.

The fishing has been very good after the improvements in thewade area. Visibility is low, 1 – 2 feet at the best, due to lake turnover. Thefish are still hungry and not as selective as usual. We caught fish last week, all day on almost anything red. We also did well on Iron Grey Big Mac’s in 18and 20 and small size 24 black midges. Between 11:00 and 1:00 we hit severalmidge hatches where we killed them on size 24 grizzly fore & aft patterns.

Tuesday I fished with below the dam with Tim Froehlich, andwe did very well on eggs and a grey kf with a clear bead or a black threadhead. The tough part was trying to get through all the fingerlings that werestocked last week. At first it was fun to see a strike on every cast, but thenwe had to hunt for the bigger fish. If we saw a bunch of small fish rising, wewould walk by it, and look for water with out all the little guys on top. The water is still on the dirty side, Navajo Resevoior is turning over, but that is not bothering the fish. For the last few weeks we have been catching fish on red larva, grey and black kf's, grey fluff baetis, and my new HCPT, a micro tubbing pheasant tail.

This was Brad's first Trout on the fly! Our set up for most of the fish, consisted of a # 6 or #8 shot about a foot above the point fly (red larva, or leech most of the day) and then our strike incicator was posistioned between 2 - 3 feet above that. All of our fishing was done wading in the braids above the T Hole. The air temp has been cool in the mornings, but getting above frezzing before noon, and the crowds on the river are gone.

Brad had a great day.
